Margot Wilson, Interdisciplinary Artist
Following over a decade of deep studies in philosophy, writing and art, my practice moving forward will explore sculpture as the possibility of a collective resonance for a shared harmonic, investigating how acoustic form, ancient technologies, and luminous materials shape experience. Philosophically, my practice is grounded in both early Buddhist teachings on ignorance and freedom and in modern resonant theories from Hermann von Helmholtz’s acoustics to contemporary explorations of harmonics and vibrational aesthetics. My practice overall explores vibrational aesthetics through a post-self lens from the standpoint of embodied ritual, radical materiality, and philosophical unknowing.
Through rhythmic and arrhythmic gestures, I explore the aesthetics of ignorance, material emergence, and the unseen forces shaping presence. Often collaborating with choreographers and sound artists, I create sensorial environments that examine how form is held, inhabited, or undone. My research projects include a Venus Manifesto advocating for humane cohabitation and embodied resistance to binary and ecological violence.
This ethos flow through my portfolio of current work including Venus Resurrection / Unrest Wheel, 2,000 Venus maquettes in clay that explore the material’s inherent anthropomorphic qualities, while Predictive Text, a 2-km continuous scroll, navigates the space between divination and fiction. Drawing from Kerouac’s “kick writing” and Kafka’s Metamorphosis, this textual meditation reimagines astrological frameworks and in particular, The Third Millennium, for binary-free futures. Collaborative projects like the Breath Quartet integrate sound and movement as acts of analytical streaming consciousness. The Furies explore the archaic verb meaning of the myth to raise, stir, excite as protest. My Venus Manifesto and SYBLS examine material vulnerability and agency through sculpture, textiles, and performative installation. The SYBLS project, also hand-sewn, protean figures, merge muslin, marble dust, and thread, embodying breath-like expansion and contraction. Their intestinal compositions reference the gut as a second brain, anchoring soma-neuro holding patterns.
Returning to education in my 40s, I studied philosophy, writing, and fine art to explore paradoxical freedom in predictive systems—astrology, tarot, automatic writing, and improvisational art-making. Influences include Duchamp, Cage, Bourgeois, Kerouac, and Lyotard, with my work rejecting repetition and aesthetic preconceptions to investigate intuition, trust, and agency.
With degrees from Birkbeck, the University of Glasgow, and the Royal College of Art, my work has been exhibited in group shows at Tate Modern (Tate Lates), the Royal Scottish Academy, and the Czech Centre, London. I have presented at the Royal College of Psychiatry Congress and the Science of Consciousness Conferences. I'll now complete my art practice led research studies at the Slade School of Fine Art - MFA Sculpture.
