BREATH QUARTET WINTER SOLSTICE CEREMONY 2023
“Despite our very recent appearance on the planet, humanity combines arrogance with increasing material demands, even as we become more numerous. Our toughness is a delusion. Have we the intelligence and discipline to vigilantly guard against our tendency to grow without limit?” Lyn Margulis
Through tantric and intuitive breath dance practices and percussive electronic soundscapes Breath Quartet performs as a cosmic lung circulating ancestral photosynthesis. Eyes open and closed the waves churn a gyre sky high and ocean deep. Mouth open and closed the holo-breath pulses a ruptured Earth and grieving Milky Way. Our breath is borrowed, our lives are brief, all that truly exists is movement and the sound the moving makes.
In Margulis’s words “[w]e are all of us walking communities of bacteria. The world shimmers, a pointillist landscape made of tiny living beings.”
We are Margot Wilson (breath&space holder) @margot_wilson_art, Patrick Ziza (movement) @patrick_ziza, HaeDong Lee (sound) @haedonglee, Yidan Kim (olfactory) @yida_studio, Marcus Herne (sound) www.marcusherne.com, James Merrell (visuals) and Athena Wang (curator) @athenamothership

EXHIBITIONS: 2023
PROPHECY OF FUTURE EXTINCTION: Royal College of Art, CAP Studio Exhibition (Nov-Dec 2023)
Prophecy of Future Extinctions is a collective contemplation of the future of a species condemned to self-wrought annihilation.
Six artists juxtapose conceptual, philosophical and practical observations of extinction as a concentrated force of deliberate erasure, as they generate a site of ultimate anthropocenic aftermath.
In imagining the sabotage and decolonisation of established structures of power, tradition, and social order in a future far removed, the artists also consider the possibility that this age is approaching faster than humanity is willing to accept. Technology becomes a catalyst for entropy, as extinction transforms into a slow-release macroscopic ctrl+alt+delete.
Drawing upon intuitive processes firmly rooted in ancient knowledge and ritual practice, these works materialise a fluid posthuman topography glimpsed via states of elevated consciousness. This exhibition ultimately invites the audience to soak in the possibilities of extinction and consider the future as a living, breathing site of resistance.Curator @athenamothership Artists: @lixinliart @chromosapiens @have_some_dignity @margot_wilson_art @haedonglee @athenamothership Photo @athenamothership

Upcoming Projects
BREATH QUARTET will perform a ceremonial durational piece on the Winter Solstice 2023, Spring Equinox & Summer Solstice 2024. Here is the full length Breath Quartet Volume One performance.
BREATH QUARTET situates breath as possibly the only non-commodified aspect of human existence. Each performance is a fluid collaborative convergence of human and cosmic breath that uses improvisational kinetic choreographies to illuminate entangled emergent interdependent communal being. Circulating freely, the urgency of breath disrupts conventional and suppressed diaphragmatic volumes, oscillating between spiral fugues and ephemeral waves. Through tantric and intuitive breath dance practices and percussive electronic soundscapes Breath Quartet performs as a cosmic lung circulating ancestral photosynthesis. Eyes open and closed the waves churn a gyre sky high and ocean deep. Mouth open and closed the holo-breath pulses a grieving Milky Way. Breath Quartet expands Wilson's personal breath-directed altered states meditation practice, collaborating with Patrick Ziza (movement), Marcus Herne (sound), and James Merrell (visuals).
